Introduction
From the words of Tanaka Raiko
"The Novice Day event started as a celebration of the Novices in the SCA. The first one was a humble procession of fighters and their consorts to show us who they are and what it means to fight for something more than just yourself. It was a joyous, really joyous affair. Gunnar Alfson won the inaugural tourney. He was taken from us too soon. So in his honor we named the [heavy fighting] tourney after him."
As the event has grown, so too have the people we celebrate that join the East Kingdom's Novices. Everyone within two years of joining the SCA are welcome to join in the various forms of competition offered. Of course, not everything is about competition. There are many new connections made at Novice Day, and it brings people together from all over the kingdom. Novices from Tir Mara to Iron Bog have come to share their joy and skill in many of the activites we work towards.
Traditionally the event is held in the Shire of Rusted Woodlands
East Kingdom Novice Day Highlights
Tournaments are preceded by a procession of combatants with their consorts/inspirations. If a contestant doesn't have one, one will be provided.
- Heavy tournament - Gunnar Alfson Memorial tourney
A heavy weapons tournament showcasing the talents of our novice fighters (within 2 years of their initial authorizations). The champion will wield for one year the Novitius Gladio for their term as East Kingdom Novice Champion.
- Fencing Tournament
A fencing tournament showcasing the prowess of our novice fencers (within 2 years of their initial authorizations). The champion will wield for one year the Arma Novitii (buckler, sword, and baldric of the novice) before passing them down to the next champion.
- Arts & Sciences - Populace and Laurel vote
Arts & Sciences are an important part of the East Kingdom and our Novices are welcome to bring their works to share and place on display. Any A&S project are welcomed and encouraged to be brought to the event. The competition is open to all gentles who do not hold a Kingdom or Baronial level A&S award, nor have they won a major championship. There will be voting by both the Populace and the Laurels.
- Novice Target Archery Shoot
Target Archery Archers are welcome, and a range is setup for participants to learn, share, and test their skills. For A.S. LVIV (59) a five-station "Butts" (the medieval term for the archery field) with a heraldry theme was created.
- Thrown Weapons
Thrown Weapons are also in play, and a range is setup for those who wish to explore this set of skills. This is an excellent event for all to try out different types of weapons before purchasing their own.
~ Classes: There will be classes. If you are interested in teaching something, please let us know! ~ Fighting authorizations: Last chance before Pennsic. Combatants are allowed to authorize the day of this event, and represents the last opportunity to do so prior to Pennsic.
