Introduction

Muirgel Bera joined the SCA in 2018 because she realized that it had the potential to give her an outlet or a reason to do all the crazy things she had already started to do with fiber arts. The community she discovered here was a lovely bonus and a major reason for staying. She is a member of Malagentia.

Persona

Muirgel Bera is a mid-9th century Anglo-Saxon (Old English) woman of fair means. Her father was awarded land in Northumbria in 822CE north-northwest of York, UK and Muirgel herself married a farmer's son far enough away from her father's household that visits were difficult, although not so far that visits were impossible. She lived a comfortable life with her husband and children until 860CE when a fever struck. After the loss of her husband, the farm began to find itself in a mire of bad luck. In a fit of desperation, she turned to other means of clothing her household after the fabric the farm produced had all been sold off. Stinging nettle was her plant of choice for this, as it easily grew wild and only needed picking, although it did require more work to harvest enough to make the same amount of fabric flax would. Unfortunately, it was in late August of 866CE when harvesting nettle to make a dress for her youngest child that Muirgel met her end at the hands of an unknown assailant.

While Muirgel is early middle ages, I've become more interested in other eras as I get more proficient with sewing and tend to time travel depending on the season.

Name is pronounced "Mwihr-gul" "Bear-ah"

Projects & Publications

  • Brimless Hat - Project page on Ravelry is not updated with all of my notes for this project.
  • Knitting 101: Washcloths - You may find Muirgel teaching beginning knitting at events in the East Kingdom. Previously taught at Pennsic 2022, Harper's Retreat 2023, GNEW 2024/2025.
  • Cabling without a Cable Needle - Class taught at Autumn's Inspiration 2025
  • Processing Nettle Experiment #1 - Harvested stalks of stinging nettle in 2023 in the hopes of processing it into fiber.
  • 9th Century Garb Post - A blog post about an overdress I recently made.
  • Blog with A&S projects that also includes class notes.
  • Artifacts of a Life - The final day of Muirgel Bera. Documentation will be added to a page at a later date (I'm trying to decide how to display my stuff online going forward).
  • I Dyed for This - Wherein I figure out a baseline for common dyes that I can refer to for future projects.
  • 2026 Malagentia Test Kitchen Northern Chef Competition Entry - My write-up for this was done a few days before the event and ended up being a little silly, but the recipe I followed for the meat pie is in here. I'd highly recommend it, especially with some sort of bacon bit or chunk in the mix (don't process with the rest of the meat).

In Case of Court

Throw a bottle of Scotch at my head.

Or email me, as email is probably the best way to get in touch. If you want to be sneaky about it, get in touch with Ro Honig von Sommerfeldt, Molly Schofield, Lydia Webbe, Octavia Valeria, Aurelia Colleoni a'Buccafurno, or Diamond Stone.

Please refrain from the use of "faux hand" if applicable in the making of any scrolls. I tend to try to go most Malagentian events (GNEW, Harvest Moon) and some further afield East Kingdom events. While I enjoy the event and will likely be there, please do not schedule awards for me at Birka.
