Introduction

Early Years

Lord Magnus Surtsson joined the SCA in June of 2010. He got his start as a member of Hus Hallvardr of Rolling Thunder. His first event was the Whatever Festival demo in Augusta where he fought heavy list for the first time. Magnus started out by making his own brigandine, a sword, and a shield, he borrowed the rest of his armor kit until he was able to make or buy a full kit. His Second event was the Great North Eastern War where he fought in many battles and met many new people as well as tried mead for the first time. After learning how easy it was to get started, Magnus tried his hand at brewing. By the end of his first year, Magnus had become a fighter, weapon and armor maker, and amateur brewer.

Finding a New Niche

After a few years as a fighter, Magnus racked up a bit of injuries including heat exhaustion on the battle field. Near the end of 2013 Magnus discovered archery and found a new outlet to focus on. Though he still fights occasionally, Magnus has been focusing on archery since 2014. In that time, Magnus has made dozens of archery targets and loaner arrows. He designed and constructed the set of 3 targets used for Royal Rounds shoots at practices and events. As a member of Hus Hallvardr, Magnus has been compelled towards service. Regardless of whether he is on an event’s staff or not, he will always help with set-up tear-down and cleaning whenever needed. Magnus and his wife, Lady Sigrida Arnsdottir, have also been active merchants running a shop called Sigrid & Magnus’ Leather Emporium. Their focus is on leather and fabric goods including belts, pouches, archery equipment, bags, and tents. Magnus is most known today as an archer and a vendor.

Persona

Magnus Surtsson was born in the town of Rouen, Normandy in 907. Magnus was an only son of an invading Norwegian man named Surtr. Surtr was named after the Fire Giant from Norse Mythology who helped kill the gods during the events of Ragnarok. Surtr fought with Rollo the future Duke of Normandy who lead Norsemen on raiding parties to North Francia and lay siege to the city of Paris. After a partially successful raid the king of Francia offered the Viking leader Rollo the land of Normandy to settle as a buffer to protect Paris from more invading Vikings. Surtr settled in Rouen near the Seine River and married a local french farmer named Brunhilde. Brunhilde and Surtr taught Magnus fighting, hunting, gathering, farming, and leather work. as an adolescent Magnus got the itch to travel and see the world...
