Introduction
Hello! I'm Lady Magdalena Lantfarerin, known as Magdalena the Migrant, an active member with the Shire of Caer Adamant since 2003. My pronouns are She/Her and my 'mundane' name is Jen Hintz Eggers. I joined the SCA as a teenager being silly wearing my Ren Faire costume to the mall - a local member saw me and pointed me towards the website and I jumped right in! Over the years my family has played off and on with me, some may know my father - Nicholas Johann Claus - who has long enjoyed an annual journey to Pennsic. While I do not have a defined persona (my name is decidedly German), I have primarily been interested in the ways culture moves and changes through the movement of people. I typically wear clothing from the Ottoman, Persian and Indian cultures (roughly 15th cent).
In recent years, I have been playing more from home while tending to my young family. However it's my delight to keep up connection with the SCA through creating scrolls for Awards. I have enjoyed researching fine and decorative arts through the scribal arts, and work from digitized primary sources with the goal of copying them as closely as possible.
Images of my scribal works can be found online at my portfolio
Areas of Study
- Scribal Arts - Calligraphy and Illumination
- Painting - making period paints and pigments
- Pottery - Salt Glaze firing
- Bookbinding - Coptic and Belgian style bindings
- Middle Eastern culture - dance and Turkish coffee
Outside of the SCA I am a professional Artist working primarily in painting. My formal training overlaps with my SCA studies and my scribal practice has greatly informed my studio practice. I love to encourage those who are taking up painting and am happy to discuss materials, techniques, and history.
