Introduction
Good day, friend. If we have not yet met, I look forward to it.
This has been a varied life I’ve done my best to take lightly. Travelled the globe as a musician doing the music thing in North America, Europe, and Africa. A father to three sons I’m very proud of, and I live mundanely north of Montreal in the Laurentiens, the mountain range from which I defend the fair barony of Ile du Dragon Dormant. I write songs.
Like many, this SCA story has been one of constantly becoming. When I found the SCA by accident, and was happy to find friends already here. It made me feel welcome. I became a SCAdian thanks to friends I made over the next few years across the East. Lifelong friends are hard to find, and the SCA is a great place to find them.
I love to fence and love to be with my friends in the fencing community. There is joy to be found in the song of steel, and I have enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly competition that is to be found in the East. I answered the call to join the ranks of the Pennsic Rapier Champions three times and do my best to contribute to Eastern fencing as a teacher and autocrat, teaching whenever asked and running a KnQ championship in the middle of a blizzard.
I’ve had some success as a tourney fighter, placing second in a KnQ Rapier Championship, making five sweet 16s, and won Birka in *mumble mumble mumble* and have been baronial champion and winner of many regional tourneys. All that said, I prefer free-bout and learning about rapier in classes rather than competition. I participate in the competitions these days to inspire others and push them to improve. While I still do fence a few times a week and do my best, my focus has shifted to offering my learning to others so they can do what they will with it.
I fiddle, sing, play guitar, and create songs often. I have written some songs for the SCA campfire which I love to share.
If you need something done, I might be able to help you. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
Persona
An Englishman, and a courtier in service to nobility in 1590, John was often found in Italy and the Lowlands. A friend to composers, especially William Byrd and Peter Philips, he was suspected to have Catholic leanings in Protestant England, which might explain why he was so frequently abroad. Found where the music is, he has been known to participate in exhibitions of rapier from time to time. He is proficient with voice, viol, fiddle, and lute.
Interests
I’m hoping to learn more about leather working, woodworking, fletching, and day to day skills of Renaissance England. I have a source for inexpensive leather if you have need.
