Introduction

There was a time in early-history, about 1984, at a small field among the sage brush of Austin Texas; Waterloo Park where a flash of sunlight on metal was sighted. That is all it took. It was fighter practice at “Pais Cumbrai of Atenveldt” (AS XIX) now Bryn Gwlad of Ansteorra.

In those early days the Seneschal would have a listing for “Richard Lionheart” in the local paper telephone book - as there was no other way to contact people without using what used to be called a phone tree. Helmets were made from re-fashioned old freon tanks and hockey equipment was armor de jure.

Ivan Sergeevich Scherbatskoy has been officially in the SCA since summer of 2000 when he and his small family attended Panther Vale Festival of Fools and Panteria II or III – we borrowed clothing from a local theater that had performed Shakespeare so we did not have to wear jeans.

Ivan has always done archery and tries to help people to learn the beginning parts of artillery, but has also done Heraldry, Webministery, Troll, Designed targets, Made mead and brewed, Built shelters, Made pottery, and has tried to be a regular all around helper. He is known for his loud voice that “stills the rustling of leaves”, as well as for his mead.

Persona

Pomenisk Ivan Sergeevich Scherbatskoy was born in the 11th century as the fourth child of landed gentry and generals, in the Kyivan-Rus area of Novgorod and Kyiv. He was not needed as a spare child – the older siblings being healthy and strong - so received nothing but a single Srebrenik and thus having to make his own way in the world. Ivan would eventually receive the title of Pomenisk (Kyivan-Rus for lord/overseer) for the lands at Three Falls House.

Scherbatskoy means “nicked sword” as in good fighter; the sword is strong enough and it holder strong enough to have survived many battles. A long bow is easier and cheaper than a sword and Ivan was able to travel and use his various bows to find room and board and further his usefulness to the royalty as well as make a name for himself – even as a fourth child.

Along the way he picked up skills in brewing and is known for his “Winter Warming Mead” a cinnamon/clover/citrus blend good for a cold night, as well as pottery.

After years of travel and exploration, battles, and mead, he eventually joined (married) with a Norse woman “Aldis Thorbjornardottir” and has three children; Lady Genoa Scherbatskaja, Lady Ekaterina Scherbatskaja, Emelin Scherbatskaja.

In Case of Court

My name is pronounced Pome-A-neesk E-van Sair-GAY-a-vich sure-BATS-coy

I do not mind being surprised by court, but I have sat in court and not realized I was being called due to my name being very badly mispronounced.
