Eleanor Inhean Mhic Congail was born on January 18th, 1290, to a farmer named Maelodor and his wife named Proinndeas in Eoghain, Tyrconnell Ireland. Eleanors early life was a peaceful as could be expected when the entire village was always on the lookout for the precocious farmer’s daughter being underfoot trying to help everyone she could manage. To keep his daughter occupied Maelodor taught his daughter how to read, write and do arithmetic. Eleanor found herself flourishing in both reading and writing. She was never gifted with numbers but was able to get by and understand the math that came with the running of a profitable farm. In 1300 Eleanor found herself growing up early when her mother died in childbirth. Unfortunately, the ever-anticipated little brother also died on that dark day. Eleanor’s father took to fishing deeper in the sea than he had ever dared before to combat the grief he felt at the loss of his beloved wife. This pattern continued with Eleanor taking much of the daily running and operations of the family farm over. In 1306 when Maelodor didn’t return from a sailing expedition after a storm out at sea Eleanor had to face the reality that her father was lost at sea. Eleanor inherited the family farm. One year later Eleanor was finally old enough to apprentice with the midwife from the next village over. Eleanor wanted to be a midwife so that she could prevent the death of more women in childbirth. This was how she was able to heal from her mother’s untimely demise. Eleanor never chose to marry but was kept company by her many friends in the village and the two Irish wolfhounds she kept for herding and protection.
