Introduction
Maighstir (may-stir) Cyprian an Doire, Master of Defense, has been active in the SCA since 2016 and now resides in the Barony of the Bridge in the East Kingdom. He first entered the Society through rapier combat, which remains his greatest passion, but his interests quickly broadened to include period board games, alchemy and perfumery, sewing and costuming, calligraphy and illumination, and heraldry. Over the years, Cyprian has served his groups and kingdoms in many capacities. In Gleann Abhann, he held multiple offices, including Seneschal and Webminister of the Shire of Wyrmgeist, Deputy Webminister/ Systems Administrator at the kingdom level, and Rapier Experiment Deputy overseeing kingdom-wide fencing initiatives. He has also served as a rapier champion, entourage member, and marshal at numerous events. His dedication to service and teaching has been recognized with numerous awards, most notably his elevation to the Order of Defense in 2024. Today, Cyprian continues to explore the intersections of rapier combat, historical games, and may other arts & sciences, while remaining deeply involved in the fabric of Society life.
Persona
Cyprian an Doire is a 16th-century Scottish fencer, alchemist, and intriguer, sworn by blood oath to Mary, Queen of Scots.
Maighstir Cyprian an Doire was born on the shores of Loch Lomond in 16th-century Scotland, amid the turbulent politics of the reign of James V and Mary of Guise. His family became bound by a blood debt to the line of Mary, Queen of Scots, and from this oath his loyalty was sealed: Mary alone would forever be free from his blade or his intrigues.
At the request of James V and Mary of Guise, Cyprian was trained by some of the finest minds and masters of his age. He studied the art of fencing under Joachim Meyer and admired the innovations of Camillo Agrippa. He learned the subtleties of alchemy and perfumery from apothecaries, experimented with poisons and distillations, and picked up skills in naval warfare, political maneuvering, and games of chance and skill.
A lover of German-style blades and armor, Cyprian traveled widely and was known to resurface across Europe with new knowledge and sharper craft. He delighted in contests both martial and intellectual, excelling at chess, Rithmomachia, Karnöffel, and other period games.
Cyprian worked with Isabella Cortese on experiments in distillation and metallurgy, and with René Bianchi in the power struggles of Italian courts, further sharpening his skills in alchemy and intrigue. A companion and supporter of David Rizzio, Cyprian was absent on the night of his murder — a loss he never forgave, and one that forever shaped his view of loyalty in court.
