Lady Colette Beatrix de Hérisson joined the SCA in college in the then-shire of Endewearde. Her first interest was with rapier combat and her first event was the Bare Blade Tavern Brawl in 1996. She served as a student-teacher within UMaine's Blade Society, as well as Vice President and President. She received her Award of Arms from Lucan V and Marieke II on 4/1/2020 at Northern Lights. She moved to Malagentia in June 2000 where she did rapier combat and teaching before shifting her focus to raising 3 young SCAdians of her own, food research, clothing herself and others, and going down rabbit holes while bringing others into the SCA and fostering their interests and seeing them accomplish great things.
Past and current interests include, but are not limited to:
- Tablet weaving
- Recipe research and redaction
- Period homes and encampments (and improving atmosphere at events)
- Roman, 14th and 15th century clothing, decorations, and accessories
- Rapier combat
Name and arms are not registered but are in process.
Colette Beatrix is from Hérisson, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France in the early 1400s. While some might call it small, its prime position on the River Aumance, equidistant on the route between Limoges and Geneva, one of the last major towns before the foothills of the Alps, had warranted castles there for as long as any in her life could remember and the Duke of Bourbon had even built a modern, bright castle there which was finished when her grandfather was young.
Her grandfather had worked on the castle in his youth and told her stories of the old castle and the construction of the new and the growth of their town. There had even once been a Roman city nearby and her grandfather used to take her to the ruins when she was young, explaining what had stood there before just by reading the lay of the stones, building a picture of a large and luxurious city. He also taught her how to read the Latin from those ancient Roman stones, as well, though her mother would have undoubtedly disapproved. Her reading has served her well at different times, performing some work with the local church and convent in maintaining their libraries when she was younger - the later was likely to pique her interest in a religious life, but she had no interest.
Her father, like his father, was less tied to convention and believed in her ability to defend herself. He schooled her in the art of defending her with both rapier and dagger and even just her cloak. She particularly excels at the art of taking down others with just a dagger and cloak, as those are the most likely weapons for her to have at hand. As her father tutored many of the more privileged young men of the town the arts of rapier combat, none had dared confront her, having either seen, heard of, or presumed her skill - or feared her father when he lived. Though long out-of-practice since his death, her hands sometimes itch for the weight of a blade.
Colette appears to live a largely conventional life as an adult - she takes care of her family, enjoys clothing them and herself well, takes joy particularly in weaving beautiful trims. She enjoys cooking, particularly cheese-making, and is often adventurous in her choices of cuisines, choosing dishes from far afield, gathered from the travelers who pass through, to the amusement of her neighbors. Colette is often considered an eccentric, dabbling in many different arts, gaining some skill, passing on that skill, then finding something new to learn.
Colette has an excellent imagination and sometimes like to pretend that she is an Roman lady from the 1st or 2nd centuries, living in the villas she explored as a child, eating Roman food she read about illicitly in the libraries she accessed in her youth. Her life in that time is not so different from her normal life, excepting the flowing silks and veils and a lack of religious-informed social constraint.
