Introduction

Lord Conn mac Branain (previously known as Conn MacSainrith Bhranain)

I was introduced to the SCA as a concept in 1988 in university by my best friend. My immediate reaction was “That’s like live D&D! Cool!” There was no local branch in Prince Edward Island and for one reason or another – life being the primary reason – I never followed up on that initial interest until winter 1993. My friend and I made the journey to an event in the Barony of Ruantallan and we were both hooked.

On the road trip back, we decided to start a group and I somehow volunteered to be the Seneschal. That September, we held our first meeting, got the paperwork signed and sent off within a few days and thus the Canton of Ynys y Gwaed was born.

I remained active in YYG both as an officer and as just a peon until 1998, when I moved to An Tir and got to know the wonderful people of the then-Shire of Dragon’s Mist (now Barony of).

Came back from An Tir in 2003, got active again in YYG in 2005 and remained so until 2008, when I moved to the heart of Ruantallan, where, again due to Life™, I went inactive until moving back to YYG in 2014. Since Fall 2015, I’ve been active in YYG again (though now, the YYG stands for Ynys y Gwaun).

I like to weave, bake bread, and am an unabashed policy wonk.

Last, I am a fierce advocate of Tir Mara and hopefully its journey towards becoming a full principality.

Persona

Conn was born in 1169 in southeastern Ireland.

Projects & Publications

  • Northern Shores Region Principality Steering Committee. I served as my canton's representative on the committee, communicating the questions and concerns of the canton's members to the committee as well as educating the members of the canton about the principality process.
  • Inspired by Firebrand Herald, I’ve begin a project to record the current and past customs and traditions of the Barony of Ruantallan and the surrounding Shires. There are many customs that I remember from when I started which are now no longer practiced, and many more which have been forgotten. This is our history, our link to the past. It tells the tale of how we got here and who we aspire to be as a Society, and it needs to be written down before it disappears entirely.
  • Chair of the Tir Mara Populace Badge Committee. The committee formed in June 2017 as the result of a long discussion on the Tir Mara Facebook page. A small group of like-minded people decided it was time we did something about the lack of a Tir Mara populace badge and so we set about to rectifying that. By October, we'd finalized the process we would use and took the project public on Oct 16. We held a design competition and polled the populace on what design they wanted, with the results being presented to Their Royal Majesties in March, 2017. TRM approved the results and the new badge has been approved by the College of Arms.

More Information

In Case of Court

I do not wish to receive awards in virtual court. If push comes to shove, I would be happy to have an award read into the record at a virtual court, as long as a physical presentation can be arranged for a more suitable time. Please notify my Peer, Mistress Elizabeth Darnley, in advance.

In Case of Peerage

Should it ever come to pass that I be considered for a Peerage, I would like to receive a Writ in advance, so that my vigil and elevation can be planned properly and, most importantly, so that as many of my friends and loved ones as can be might have the chance to attend.

My Peer, Mistress Elizabeth Darnley, must be notified in advance.

Activities

  • Thrown Weapons
  • Heraldry
  • Archery
  1. Names and Armoury - I have a greater interest in armoury than I do names, but I'm quite willing to help someone with both their name and armoury.
  2. Voice - Since July 2019, I have gotten much more into voice heraldry than I had done in the past, specifically in the area of Site Heraldry (making announcements of activities at events and coordinating heraldic activities at events), where I have been trying to encourage Event Stewards to seek out and use heralds much more than is currently the practice when planning and running events.
  3. Instruction - Also since July 2019, I have begun offering classes on Voice heraldry.
