Master Harold von Auerbach originally received this appointment from Queen Marieke II, and passed it on to Baroness Lyana of Kernough during the reign of Lucan and Elspeth. To the best of Master Harold's knowledge, she has not passed it forward.

The responsibility of the Uncorker of the Bottles of the Ocean is to open any beached bottle which contains a message, read the message and determine if it is important enough to be brought to the attention of the Crown of the East.

It is said that this has a period antecedent in an Elizabethan office, but there is some doubt. Wikipedia says: "In the 16th century, the English navy, among others, used bottle messages to send ashore information about enemy positions. Queen Elizabeth I even created an official position of 'Uncorker of Ocean Bottles', and anyone else opening the bottles could face the death penalty."
