The Star of Cilicia

based on a Christian Armenian poem

I beheld a bright fallen star,

Standing close beside the field.

Her smile shining, clear from afar,

And cold water did she wield.

"Gaze not too long", quoth my brother,

"Petra Sweet is guarded well.

Barabbas' love's like no other:

Zealot's heart but she can quell.

"Then Petra's smile grew brighter still,

Husband at her feet he kneel'd.

Full well she show'd love in her eyes.

Their two souls were interlac'd.

Sacred beauty, no man denies:

Turn'd my gaze as they embrac'd.
