During the Mongol invasions of Japan (元寇, Genkō), which took place in 1274 and 1281, were major military efforts taken by Kublai Khan of the Yuan dynasty to conquer the Japanese archipelago after the submission of the Korean kingdom of Goryeo to vassaldom, Temur had stayed behind at first as a prisoner and later as a researcher where he took on many of the japanese ways in regard to combat and armor of the time until he was able to return home in 1282.  [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kublai_Khan Kublai Khan] was the grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Yuan Dynasty in 13th-century China.
