Introduction

Sugawara-hakase is a Laurel specializing in mid-Heian Japan. A resident of the Barony of Carolingia, she very much enjoys teaching, sharing her love of the period, and serving her community. Her primary areas of study include literature, poetry, dyeing, sewing, weaving, and painting and calligraphy.

Persona

In the land of the rising sun, during the Heian period—a time when the cherry blossoms painted the skies with their ephemeral beauty—there lived a noble lady of the esteemed Sugawara Uji, named Naeme-hime. Born in the year of heaven's favor, 980, her tale ripples through time, even unto the present year of 1026.

Naeme-hime's journey through the tapestry of life first led her far from home. In 1001, while on pilgrimage, she found herself unexpectedly in a distant land known as the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann. There, she shared her art in costuming, calligraphy, and courtly service, fostering many in creating their own Japanese personas. At the end of 1013, she and her companion, Ogawa, traveled to the East Kingdom to tend to his family, making the Barony of Carolingia her new home.

Within her adopted Kingdom, she continued to serve with grace and skill. Her prowess in the arts earned her the esteemed position of Consort's Champion of Arts and Sciences. In the flow of seasons, with a heart full of loyalty, she embraced the role of Royal Retainer, vowing to serve the Kingdom and the Crown with unwavering dedication.

When not attending to the imperial splendor of the court, Naeme-hime seeks solace and enlightenment on pilgrimages to sacred shrines and hallowed temples. The ink from her brush fills the air with delicate tanka poetry, her soul weaving through the rhythms of literature and arts. She finds boundless joy in sewing, weaving, and painting, drawing inspiration from the timeless beauty of the Genji Monogatari, her heart’s most cherished tale.

Yet, whispers drift through the corridors of the imperial palace, like autumn leaves on a gentle breeze, suggesting that this refined lady of the court has immersed herself in arts more mysterious, shadowed in the martial discipline of the naginata.

Thus, the tale of Naeme-hime unfolds—a narrative woven with elegance and enigma, as she walks the path of both beauty and might, under the watchful eyes of the gods and the gentle glow of the moon. She hopes one day to return to the Heavenly Isle and the storied capital, Heian-kyo; until then, she shares her knowledge, art, and service with the Society.
