(Since we're all being so verbose...I'll probably want to edit this later.) He shifted the shield's grip as he crouched with the brush, waiting for the foe to approach. He chuckled to himself...if his brothers could see him now.

It had been strange events indeed which had brought him to this point. The third son of a minor German lord, his father had little interest in grooming him for any real purpose. His two oldest sons were enough for him. So, when Simon reached an age, his father packed off to the Church in an attempt to appease his wife's family. Her brother served in the Order of the Knights Templar, and the boy had always wanted to follow in his uncle's footsteps. But the Crusades ended his uncle's life and left him at the mercy of Baliq the Khazar. Baliq told him that he would spare his life. But only if he chose to serve Baliq's liege.

And so, a mostly forgotten son of a German lord, schooled by the church came to serve a Byzantine Duke. To call Scots and Vikings brothers and family.
