Introduction

Mistress Sarah Davies joined the SCA in 1989. She has served the Barony of Bergental as chronicler, Minister of Arts and Sciences, Luminary, and jill-of-all-work.

Sarah's primary focus of study is pre-1600 European quilting, patchwork, and applique. Her pioneering research in these areas led to her being admitted to the Order of the Maunche in 1996, and becoming the SCA's first Laurel for quilting in 2006. She is also an accomplished dyer in silk and linen, an acceptable illuminator, a beginning knitter, and sings alto in Concentus, the baronial choir.

She dwells happily in Bergental with enough books to choke a horse, far more fabric than she can use, over 100 quilting books, and a cat named Malfoy.

Persona

Sarah Davies is a Welshwoman of the late 15th/early 16th centuries. Her parents were among the many, many, many Welsh who benefited from the rise of Henry Tudor to the English throne, both in lands and position. Sarah, an only child, was carefully educated to take over the family business, and now lives in Italy, where she oversees the family import business and studies the New Learning so popular in Florence, the Veneto, and the Holy City. She is particularly fascinated by the beautiful textiles imported from the lands of the Turk and the Indies.

Current Projects and Research

Mistress Sarah is currently researching early patchwork, particularly a Hungarian throne tapestry from the late 14th century, a 1477 funerary cushion from Tuscany, and possible clues to pieced clothing and accessories in Italian paintings of the 14th and 15th centuries. She is also finishing up a quilted Turkish caftan.
