Introduction

Perez ben Meir Gershon (Pron: PAIR-ehtz behn may-EER geer-SHOWN), MKA Gavin Skal, got started in the SCA in the autumn of 2018 in the Crown Province of Østgarðr, showing up to the local heavy combat practice after being encouraged by friends to check out the SCA and having seen the demo at the Cloisters Medieval Festival. He returned the following spring to continue training, attended his first event that September (The Feast of John Barleycorn), and formally became an SCA member in October of 2019. Looking for activities besides fighting to get involved with, and needing to eat anyway, he began delving into period recipes.

During the Great Plague of A.S. LV (COVID-19), Perez continued to explore SCA cooking, preparing mini feasts at home for his lady and he to enjoy during East Kingdom Ethereal Courts. From this (and with the aid of his local webminister, Anne of Østgarðr) sprang "Cooking with Perez", an online cooking lab held over Google Meets. He also continued working on his sword technique, becoming a regular participant in the daily online pell practice group started by Viscount Leohtulf of the Silver Hills, constructing a portable pell and setting up a practice area on his roof. For these efforts he was honored with induction into the Order of the Silver Tyger and awarded arms by Queen Margarita de' Siena, and takes the title "Effendi".

In mundane life, Perez works as an audio engineer, and is interested in helping those in the bardic arts make professional-quality recordings.

Persona

Perez is a Sephardic Jewish man who hails from the city of Salonica in Ottoman-controlled Greece during the reign of Kanunî Sultan Süleyman (Suleiman the Magnificent). A cosmopolitan by nature, Perez grew up surrounded by Spanish-speaking Jews, Orthodox Greeks, Muslim Turks, and the occasional passing Serb or Venetian. His father was a physician of some renown, and in times of war would be called away to support and tend to the Janissary corps. When he was old enough, Perez began to travel with his father on these campaigns. It was while assisting his father in the Janissary camps that young Perez began absorbing his father's knowledge, becoming particularly taken with Galen's theories on the importance of diet, and he became fascinated by the various cuisines of the lands through which they traveled. When not occupied with his duties, Perez would steal away and watch the soldiers as they trained, carefully noting their drills and exercises, and squirreling away the occasional piece of armor from fallen soldiers, intending to have them reworked upon his return to Salonica.
