There used to be four great officers (the above three plus a Chaplain).  A few years ago, our Brother-Chaplain passed away, and the brothers decided to name him Perpetual Chaplain.  Thus, no brother now fills that office.  When words are necessary or fitting, the brothers read from a collection of his old e-mails and such.  He is still with us in spirit!

Introduction

The Order of St. Adrian is a modern-medieval, fighting household within both the Society for Creative Anachronism (S.C.A.) and Medieval Scenarios and Recreations (M.S.R.), centered in the greater NYC area. It is a fraternity, a fighting company, and a religious order, however, it is important to put these various aspects in perspective, lest one arrive at a skewed view of the Brotherhood.

As a "religious order", The Order of Saint Adrian was created in the likeness of the historical military-religious orders, such as the Templars, the Hospitallers, and the Teutonic Knights. Though the brothers portray fanatical Roman Catholic warrior-monks, and though there are some devout Christians in their ranks, the true religious element of the organization is largely window dressing. The brothers wholeheartedly embrace the ideals of kindness, charity, humility, righteousness, fortitude, and respect.

As a "fighting company", the brothers attempt to echo their historical predecessors in determination, intensity, and ironclad willpower. Mental resolve and physical fitness are honed by years of training and fighting. Rattan combat is used as a vehicle for self-improvement.

As a "fraternity", unlike many of its college counterparts, the Brotherhood is a true fraternity — a ring of friends so close that they have become family. Having once paid the price of lax selection criteria, the Order has long abandoned the days of mass recruitment. Opting for quality over quantity, the brothers select members very carefully

Motto

History

The Order of St. Adrian began in the small Kingdom of Acre, an ally of the East Kingdom. In 1992 Gregorian, the patriarch of Antioch, named Andronicus Basileus Constantius, granted the Order a charter and approved of their monastic Rule, by which the brothers live their medieval lives. As the Order grew, the brothers served as the royal guard for several kings of Acre.

In the East Kingdom, the brothers have played a role in numerous knighting vigils, as well as the coronation ceremonies of King Gaufred Kelson von Heidelberg and King Gregor von Heisler. They have sometimes served as bodyguards in battle for Duke Gregor von Heisler, and they have on occasion featured prominently in the army of the East Kingdom. The Order currently has a few knights of the East in its ranks, including the current Master and Marshal. The Order currently has a working relationship with House Bloodguard, and the two groups sometimes train together. One clause in the Order’s Rule instructs a brother of St. Adrian, if he finds himself alone on the battlefield, to muster to the banner of Bloodguard until he can rejoin his brethren.

Organizational Ranks

Each brother falls into one of several membership categories, as follows:

  • Conventual Brothers (full-time members ‘of the Convent’) are the norm
  • Provincial Brothers (part-time members ‘in the provinces’) are those that cannot be full-time because of distance or some other unavoidable mundane challenge (like working almost every weekend)
  • Novices are new prospects being considered for membership
  • Brothers-in-the-Infirmary are honored alumni that are in semi-retirement from medievalism
  • Turcopoles, though not members, are friends and loyal crossbowmen that we sometimes bring to the field to bolster our force

There are three great officers (in bold below) and several minor officers. The current minor officers are shown beneath the great officers that they assist:

  • Master, or Magister, or Hochmeister (overseer of the entire Convent)
  • Treasurer, or Tresaurarius (finances)
  • Chancellor, or Cancellarius (web master)
  • Chronicler, or Chronista (contact info and history)
  • Seneschal, or Procurator (deputy Master, usually handles non-military matters)
  • Preceptor, or Praeceptor (instructor of novices)
  • Drapier, or Drapperius (garb)
  • Cellarer, or Cellararius (food, drink, reservations)
  • Kitchener, or Coquinarius (food)
  • Brewer, or Brasinarius (brewed drinks)
  • Camp Prefect (oversees Field Chapel and camp set up)
  • Marshal, or Marescallus (primary battle commander)
  • Knight Commander, or Praefectus Militum (battlefield deputy of the Marshal)
  • Undermarshal, or Sub-Marescallus (loaner armor and communal weapons)
  • Senior Sergeant, or Primus Armiger (military training)
  • Farrier, or Ferrator (emergency/onsite armor repairs)
  • Fletcher, or Flechier (combat archery)

There used to be four great officers (the above three plus a Chaplain). A few years ago, our Brother-Chaplain passed away, and the brothers decided to name him Perpetual Chaplain. Thus, no brother now fills that office. When words are necessary or fitting, the brothers read from a collection of his old e-mails and such. He is still with us in spirit!

Joining The Household

The Order of St. Adrian is always looking for humble, dedicated, loyal, hard-working guys that enjoy teamwork, history, physical challenges, and perhaps even armored combat. Given the theme of the group (that of Roman Catholic soldier-monks), we take only men as members, but we have often had women as Turcopole crossbowmen, fighting within our ranks. I should point out that we have brothers that do not fight. Any good army needs support personnel, but in the Order you are not treated as second-class citizens. Non-fighting brothers are full brothers in every respect. They are dubbed sergeants only because of the military nature of the group. We welcome fighters and non-fighters alike.

Any aspiring member must be ok with the trappings of Judeo-Christianity (how do you recreate a monastery at war without it?). Of course, we are not real clergy, nor do we intended to pass as such. I should probably note that our membership includes Jews, Roman Catholics, Fundamentalist Christians, agnostics, atheists, and perhaps one pagan (I never asked him so I don't really know). Though we don't care about actual worship ceremonies or beliefs, the brothers do stress and demand virtues that are often deemed 'good'. We are not role-players pretending to be monks for a time. Our garb is monastic, but the friendships are real. We want friends that have the classic virtues of Judeo-Christianity, such as prudence, fortitude, temperance, justice, faith, hope, and charity. We are far from perfect, but we try to be good, as individuals and as a group. In short, we don't want to hang out with jerks.

We are perfectly aware that vows of 'poverty, chastity, and obedience' do not bring hundreds of recruits to your doorstep, but we are content with a small group of high-quality members. The few and the proud, right? Anyone that would like to test the waters should contact any of the three great officers.
