SCA

Joined the SCA in 1986 up in Nordmark (Sweden) which was then part of the Principality of Drachenwald, and part of the Kindom of the East. Trained and developed the first substantial group of heavy SCA fighters of European origin. Was, to my knowledge, the European to travel to Cooper's Lake, Pennsylvania and fight during the XVth Pennsic War under the rule of their Highnesses Prince Justin and Princess Gyth of Drachenwald. At Pennsic XV made a promise to return for Pennsic XX with at least 20 Nordmark (Swedish) fighters in tow to serve the Prince in the war. Returned for Pennsic XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX before keeping the promise and return for Pennsic XX, but unfortunately only with 19 Nordmark fighters in tow... until a friend remarked that "But Your Highness, you are also a Nordmark fighter!", thus fulfilling his promise. Was knighted at Great Court in the big barn by Randal & Cathering, King and Queen of the East. Fought in the first Drachenwld Crown tournament, which was won by Elffin O'Mona. Fought in and won the second Drachenwald Crown Tournament. Thus, became the first European fighter to win the Drachenwald Coronet, get knighted and now also the first European to win the Drachenwald Crown.

Historical

Morgan FitzArthur de Grey lived in England during the 12th century. He was a crusader under Richard Plantagenet, a descendant of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou. More well-known as Richard I of England (1157–1199), also known as Richard the Lionheart, third son of King Henry II of England. Morgan was the son of Arthur de Grey, a descendant of Norman invaders that came with William I (c.1028–1087), known as William the Conqueror or William the Bastard, the first Norman King of England. This ancestor was knighted and given lands by the king for services rendered during the battle of Hastings (14 October 1066). For services rendered to King Richard during the Third Crusade (1189–1192), Morgan was knighted by the King in the Holy Land. From the crusade, he brought back a substantial amount of wealth and was then later upon his return to England gifted with land and titles by the king for his loyalty and service.

Heraldry

Morgan's device represents the crossing of the English Channel (a fess wavy) and the seashell (in dexter chief an escallop azure) that was picked up by his ancestor as a memento when first landing on English shores. Some have claimed erroneously that the seashell symbolises the crusade undertaken by Morgan, but the device pre-dates this happening.
