Dietrich of Timis provides us with a rare privilege.  As Majesties of the East, we are blessed and humbled to recognize the greatness of the gentles in our beloved Kingdom.  The East is the proud home to some of the greatest fighters, crafters, and volunteers in our Society.  In our court this evening, we recognize another great among us by inducting Dietrich of Timis into two orders at the same time.
Dietrich has been active in the society for some time and has entered numerous competitions.  The Inter-Kingdom Brewer’s Guild at Gulf Wars recognized his “Guter Met” mead entry and also honored Dietrich by pouring his mead into the memorial goblet for Guildmaster Terafan Greydragon.  

Yet it was at the River Wars’ Arts and Science competition that he caught the attention of our esteemed artisans and landed nobility with his award-winning entry of mead aged in resin-lined barrels.  This entry went far and above a simple beverage.  He showed years of detailed research using period tooling and techniques to replicate the process and patience in having the mead ferment.  In that competition, he demonstrated to the esteemed artisans in attendance his ability as a craftsman and a researcher that we value.  

Therefore, We, the Sultan Mohammad and Brenhines Corotica, do induct Dietrich of Timis into the Order of the Silver Brooch AND the Order of the Maunche, granting upon him the following arms: Sable, a tower conjoined to a fence extending to sinister and on a chief argent an eagle vert.  

In witness whereof at this Yule Revel held in the Barony of Bhakail on 10 December 2022 - AS 57 (LVII).

Every journey must begin with a first step.  Today our future Knights and Majesties came to compete as novices.  They showed the results of myriad lessons in breathing, footwork, and hip movements as they replaced their practice pells with live competition. Leaning Rapier is about learning control and discipline.  When to parry, when to retreat, and when to have the patience for the moment one’s opponent makes a mistake.

Today the novices from our Kingdom gathered for this competition so we may gaze upon our future Rapier Champions and Masters of Defense.

Days like this are what defines this Society: when we gather to celebrate those whose presence inspires us to be better.  Those absolutely pure souls whose positive energy illuminates those around them as this scroll does with these words.  They will laugh at the naughtiest joke and drink the strongest of Tequilas with their Peer.  When it is time to garb-up and run an event they do not hesitate to do the vital work needed whether it is washing dishes or running for the List.  They do not care about what they can get credit for, but how they perform each deed and how they have improved this Society for those lucky enough to work and camp with them whether others notice or not.

Torvi fra Bergstopt is one of these amazing souls.  She has literally made sure those around her got the last of the sandwiches before she ate, even while hungry herself.  When there was a last-minute need for a retainer in the Pennsic heat, she stepped up even while sun-bleached herself.  And when the Shire of Montevale needed her, she served as Exchequer, Seneschal, and Steward to this event.  One scroll is not enough to list her accomplishments, for what makes Torvi great are the myriad ways her grace illuminates those around her.  No matter what happens, she is always calm and smiling.

The Gentles of the East noticed.  We noticed.  We have heard the tales of her grace and her unassuming service.  Therefore, We, the Sultan Mohammad and Brenhines Corotica, do induct Torvi fra Bergstopt into the Order of the Silver Wheel.  In witness whereof at these Shire Wars X held in the Shire of Montevale on 15 October 2022 - AS 57 (LVII).  May her presence continue to illuminate us all.

“Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It’s off to Fight I go!”  This song is not simply the imagined battle cry of a great warrior.  It represents the best in all of us.  Like Ant-Man and Mighty Mouse before him, this great man reminds us that big things can come in fun-sized packages.  And nothing is bigger than the heart of Thanatos Apo Kato, whose name literally translates to “Death from Below”.  This name strikes fear in the shin guards of those unfortunate enough to meet him on the battlefield and causes them to adjust their cups, for Thanatos’ heart is so great his pole arm is taller than he is.

For his prowess in protecting the battlements of Carillion, we the Baronesses Mairghread and Tysha induct Thanatos Apo Kato into our Order of the Iron Bell.  Done by our hand at “Ghost, Ghouls, and Goblins” on October 8th, AS LVII

Our Barony has the illustrious honor of producing some of the most accomplished fighters, artisans, and leaders in the East Kingdom.  A singular and most wondrous gentle among us is Pixie of Iron Bog. For years, this noble has been a bastion for quiet service.  She is one who oft arrives first and leaves last, performing a myriad of essential tasks that many may take for granted. This noble's presence, whether in the back-kitchens of events or setting up and tearing down our Baronial Camp at Pennsic, has been consistent and enduring.

We, Declan and Aibhilin, Baron and Baroness of Iron Bog, do proudly and publicly recognize Pixie of Iron Bog for the valued impact this lady hath made to us and to the Barony.  Through hundreds of acts of love, this noble hath proven herself to be a pillar of our Barony, and represents as one of the most honourable and courteous among us. Therefore, we recognize Pixie of Iron Bog with Our highest honor, the Silver Cattail.  Given at the Olympic River Wars on the 25th of September in the Year of the Society LVII.

Our Kingdom and our Society are better because of the example of your service to us.

Queen Boudica, Warrior of the Iceni Tribe of the Ancient Celts bravely led rebellions against the Romans, defeating them three times before her army fell in 60 AD.  She was a larger-than-life woman known for her great intellect and cunning.  It is said her piercing glare could cause opposing armies to turn and run away.  So great of a woman was she that we still tell her tales and sing her songs some two thousand years after her death.  To this day, the word we use to describe someone with her qualities as “Bodacious”.

Today, we celebrate a true son of these Celtic traditions: an unabashedly bodacious and accomplished man whose own songs will be sung in the fighter’s camps at this and future Pennsic Wars.  The brave and noble Pádraig Ó Brádaigh.  A bear of man who has served with distinction in myriad roles including Seneshial, Exchecquer, and Champion.  A man who reforged himself in the furnace of the plague, work hardened himself into an even stronger and more formidable combatant across multiple forms.  A shining example to our next generation of fighters as the Best Squire in the Known World.

We, the Demon King of the Three Heavens Ryouko'jin Of-The Iron-Skies and the Rani Indrakshi Aani Aravinda have observed how Padraig has earned the respect and admiration of his peers on and off the field of battle and through his strength of character and service to the Society.  He can disarm his opponents with a rattan weapon or his quick wit.  He brings his intellect from the chess board to the battlefield, looking ahead to his opponents next moves.  In this Year of the Tyger, he has demonstrated himself a fighter with the heart and mettle of the fiercest Tyger.  He embodies those qualities that make him an heir to Queen Boudica.  He represents the best that the East Kingdom has to offer both the Scadian and Mundane Worlds.  Even if he cannot sew in a straight line to save his lucky charms.

Pádraig Ó Brádaigh is already known for his accomplishments as a man, now hence forth and throughout the Baronies and Shires of the East Kingdom may he also be known as a Companion of the Order of the Tyger’s Combattant.  Given this at this Great Pennsic War 49, in the Year of the Society LVII. 

In honor of this great achievement and his love of the chessboard and rattanic arts, we dedicate “White Squire”, a light-hearted Filk written in honor of Pádraig Ó Brádaigh.  Original Song, “White Rabbit”.

Legends aren’t simply born.  They are forged from the hearts of the bold on the endless practice fields and throwing ranges and stables.  Heated as competitors line up in the crucibles of glorious combat.  Quenched as two sets of eyes make contact, waiting for the marshal to begin.  Hardened as each competitor takes that first breath and releases the drawn arrow or lands a first strike with the rattan sword.  Tempered by the fellowship of both the victorious, the vanquished, and those spectating celebrating time together again.

If you are awakening from the long slumber of the plague and looking for a local weekend-long festival that goes far beyond heavy fighting, the Barony of Iron Bog invites you to join us for the Olympic River War 2022 where the Baronies of Bhakail, Buckland Cross, Carillion, Iron Bog, and Settmour Swamp will compete in fighting, fencing, equestrian, throwing, and even the bardic arts.  We call on all warriors and artisans seeking glory for their baronies to throw their favors into the hat.

For those who bring honor and glory to their barony through arts and sciences we will have myriad classes to teach and learn about the skills that keep the SCA fed and clothed and knowledgeable about our period.

For those who are focused on training the next generation of Scadians to earn their own honor, this event is youngling and padawan friendly with children’s events and even a chariot race.  You may also bring your gallant furbabies, as long as they are leashed and you police their fecal matters for no knight or squire alike likes to step in a surprise.

And for those who revel in the merriment of night-time activities, we offer structured events like bocce and torchlight tournaments.  Those who prefer to filk around a campfire, you are free to enjoy the beverage of your choice as long as you are discreet for our gracious hosts at the fairgrounds do not permit open containers.

Although the SCA complies with all applicable laws to ensure the health and safety of our event participants, we cannot eliminate the risk of exposure to infectious diseases during in-person events.  By participating in the in-person events of the SCA, you acknowledge and accept the potential risks.  You agree to take any additional steps to protect your own health and safety and those under your control as you believe to be necessary.
