Matthias Grunewald

14th Century, Austrian

Is the second son to a minor nobleman serving under Frederick I (the fair).
Matthias ancestral lands are located in and around the town of Lutz on the Mur river in Austria.

Matthias was wounded, and taken captive with 1000 nobles, including Frederick in the Battle of Mühldorf against Louis IV.
Held for three years in the Trausnitz Castle in the Upper Palatinate, with Frederick, he went with his liege on the quest to reconcile
Frederick brother Leopold to submit to Louis IV as King of the Romans, and to a captive again if Frederick did not succeed in convincing his brother to submit.

When the quest failed, Matthias returned with Frederick to Munich to be taken captive again, even though the Pope had released Frederick from his oath.
Impressed by Frederick nobel gesture, Loius renewed his old friendship with Frederick and agreed to rule the Holy Roman Empire jointly.

Matthias was rewarded for his loyal service, and has spent the following years travelling in Europe and the lands beyond.
