Mægwynn was born in Jórvík in the early 10th Century, of mixed parentage. She was the daughter of a Northumbrian woman and a Danish man. At her mother’s insistence, her given name was Anglo-Saxon, despite being raised in a Danish household. She also carried the name of her father, Brun, whose coloring she inherited. Mægwynn’s mother died in childbirth while she was still young, and so she was raised predominantly in the Norse traditions, with some Christian influence via her mother’s family.
