In the meantime he enjoys a bachelor's life of good fellowship, good food, music and his pipe.

The Barony Beyond the Mountain has made him a Companion of the White Oak and the Barony of Carolingia has inducted him into their Orders of the Moon and of the Daystar.

Mr. Knowlton practices many different crafts. He received his Laurel for his shoemaking and leatherwork. He also is a very skilled tailor and has turned his hand to many other crafts such as brewing, glass bead making, jewelry making and most recently ferrous and non-ferrous metalwork. He is an avid cook and has been the head cook for some notable feasts. He has a very keen interest in military history of the period and is a pretty fair shot with a matchlock musket.

Persona

Luke Knowlton is the fifth and youngest son of Mr. George Knowlton and his wife Mrs. Edith Cooke Knowlton. He was born in St. John’s Parish, Clerkenwell, which is just north of Smithfield, outside the London walls in March 1560. His family is in overseas trade in the new draperies and claret wine. Mr. Knowlton owns considerable interests in tanneries in Bermondsey (on the other side of the Thames), as well as other business interests, in addition to acting at a negociant for his family's firm.

Mr. Knowlton was tutored at home and then sent off Cambridge when he was 13. The next year he was put into the service of Mr. (later Sir) John Norreys as a page when he was 14. He accompanied him to Ireland as part of the old Earl of Essex’s Irish venture. He then went with Norreys and his regiment to the Netherlands in 1578. He was back home again the next year and went to court through the entree of his cousin Anthony Cooke (grandson of old Sir Anthony and possessing none of his good qualities). There he was introduced into the circle of Sir Philip Sidney and his friends, where his good voice and skill on the lute were much cried up.

He was again in the Low Countries in 1581 with Norreys and later Capt. Roger Williams, for whom he served as a sort of unofficial adjutant. He was present with Williams at the assassination of William of Orange and the Battle of Zutphen and carried the first news of Sir Philip Sidney's death to Sir Francis Walsingham and the court. He also marched in Sidney's funeral procession in February 1587. The spring of 1587 found him back in Flanders with Williams and he was at the ill-fated siege of Sluys in June, where he was wounded. He came back to England in the late summer to recover and then went to France in October with his very good friend Fulke Greville. They were both present at the decisive Battle of Coutras. In 1588, he was in England (as were very many other English professional soldiers) as part of the horse troops set to defend the island. He took part on the ill-considered Cadiz Expedition but was back in northern France by the end of the year. For the next 3 years he served in the English forces attached to the French army and saw the sieges of Rouen and Paris and much other fighting as King Henry secured his crown. Like the other English soldiers, he took part in the 1596 attack on Cadiz. In 1597 he was an "observer" at Amiens (the Queen not having authorized any participation) where he was lucky enough to run into Jehan du Lac, an old comrade in arms, whom he first met all those years ago at Coutras. When M. du Lac was wounded, Captain Knowlton made the journey home with him down to the Perigord.

Mr. Knowlton has stayed on in the area and has expanded his family’s overseas trade to wine and they now do a brisk business, as the English are so fond of sweet wines and their claret. He travels regularly between London and Bordeaux and has not yet married, although M. du Lac’s sister (the one from Sarlat) is actively looking for a suitable match for him. In the meantime he enjoys a bachelor's life of good fellowship, good food, music and his pipe.

Alternative Persona

Mr. Knowlton may often be seen in his alternative persona of G. Septimius Lucianus, a Roman officer of the Cohors XX Palmyrenorum, stationed in 3rd century Dura-Europos, Syria.
