General Information

Goals

I want to take a moment to explain my goals and purposes so that I am clear. If people have questions about this please see me directly so I can make myself clear.

My Goals: I am endeavoring to be the best person I can be with the challenges that I have. I am using the SCA (and other groups & activities) to help me accomplish this overarching personal goal.

Gentles have often asked me "I thought you were a fencer?" My reply is that "I am a servant and fighter of the East". I am following a 3 fold path: Fencing, Heavy List and Service. I do not have the express need to become a Peer of the Society; but if asked to serve I would happily step up to the challenge. This is my "resume", my "CV" to reflect this.

Awards are one way to measure my success along this path, but success is not measured by awards, personal character is. So this is my standard in which I have asked my peers to hold me to.

  • "I have a goal, to be a Master of Defense. To be a man of note and consequence." -Leo Oct 2016

MacCullan Family History

Folklore tells us that the Clan MacCullan (McCullen) are the descendants of Cu Chulainn the ancient legendary hero (Demi-god) of the Gaels. Cu Chulainn is the son of the god Lugh (of the Tuatha De Dannan {one of the tribes of the Nemedians [the “Sea Peoples” who settled the lands after ‘The Great Flood’]) and the mortal princess Deichtine MacNessa (Daughter of the King of Ulster). Lugh is the son of the Formorian Princess Ethlenn (Daughter of the Fomorian Balor) and the Danu Cain. Cain is the son of Dian Cecht (god of healing), who is the son of the great god Dagda (god of Druidry).

MacCullen Name Meaning: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Cuilinn, a patronymic from a personal name derived from cuileann ‘holly’. Cullen as of Holly, the plant, shrub was venerated by the Druids, and it is theorized that the Cullen’s were the children of the Holly plant and the sacred mistletoe that would often grow upon it. Therefore this is a great clan with sacred powers, such as healing and second-sight / aka shamans and “Druids”.

The MacCullan Clan (of Scotland) was founded by Leon O'Cuileann in the late 6th century. It is written that the O'Cuileann's originated from the Kingdom of Ulster, Ireland (Modern day Tyrone County). Leon was, as it is written in his accounts, a holy-warrior bound to (St) Columba as his personal guard. They met when Columba was a deacon studying under Saint Finnian at Clonard's Monastary. Leon claims to have saved Columba's life during the battle of Cul Dreimhne (~560AD), and attended him during his departure to Iona. Leon stayed by Columba's side during his tours through the emerging kingdom of the Dal Riata. He was called The "Lion of Iona" for his fierce fighting style, and hence the lion head on the MacCullan's coat of arms.

Leon's descendants settled in the lands of the Dal Riata of Lorn, Argyllshire; eventually becoming a sept of the Campbell Clan. During the 12th century one descendant, Léod mac Culéon was a noted Hospitaller during the crusades. He was the first to alter the family heraldry to include the "Cross-Star" in the chief of the shield. By 1414 Argyll was the estate of the Campbell’s. Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochow, Earl of Argyll named Lord Albert "The Great" MacCullan of Melfort "Viscount of Argyll" for his service to the coronet with his help in the Treaty of Rouen. (There is a family story of how he met Maximillian I on the road during his time in France. The Emperor tried to insult him but Albert turned the insult back upon the emperor; with The emperor leaving insulted!) In 1519 Albert was granted lands and a keep in Craignish, on the banks of Loch Avich. Caisteal na Nighinn Ruaidhe (The Red Keep) was a 12th century towerhouse, built on the site of an ancient crannog. Viscount Albert married the eldest daughter of a barrister of the clan MacCarthy. They had 3 children; 2 sons who lived to become barristers and Baron’s in the own right. The Keep was passed to the eldest son, Albert “The Younger”; who married the eldest daughter of a clergyman of clan Clark. They had 3 sons and 1 daughter, Leo being the youngest son. The Eldest of his sons, Albert the III, inherited the keep where he raised 2 sons and a daughter. It has been noted that the MacCullan’s of Argyll became famous for their great strength, religious devotion and healing abilities. They were loved, and respected Lairds of the region.

Leo's Story

TLDR version: 17th C. Scottish Noble Warrior-Priest who is traversing Europe; and has found his way to the 30 Years War.

Long version, you have been warned! ...

Leo is a noble warrior-priest; a stubborn, charming, and moody man who follows his heart and passions. Several have commented that he is "a bit cocky". This is not without reason, as an accomplished warrior and priest he has found much success on and off the field of battle. This is his story...

Early years (1573-93): Leo MacCullan was born on August 8th, 1573. He is the 3rd, and youngest son of Baron Albert "The Younger"; son of Viscount Albert "The Great", at Caisteal na Nighinn Ruaidhe ("The Red Keep") on Loch Avich, in the county of Argylle, Scotland. Education was granted to him starting at an early age, but as a head strong youth, he was more interested in exploring and playing "rough and tumble" in the wilderness. To this end as a youth he apprenticed with the "Royal Rangers" for 10 years, until the summer of 1592. That summer Leo had a bad riding accident, which killed his horse and left him injured.

Clergy years (1593-1613): This injury arrested his warrior path, so he joined the clergy at age 20. He spent the next 8 years in seminary, cloistered at Iona Abbey as a traditional Catholic priest. During his years at seminary he found that his religious leanings tended more towards the new Lutheran/protestant movement, which again put him in opposition with family tradition. He was eventually ordained as a priest on Mid-summers 1599. The church sent him to serve at Inveraray Castle as a soothsayer and healer, to keep him from preaching and proselytizing. This position brought him and his family much contentment, but his adventurous ways never left his heart.

During his time at Inveraray Castle his martial spirit never left his body. He found his body healed slowly over the years and would still practice his wrestling and grappling, and occasionally had the opportunity to read on manuals of the martial persuasion. Yet after 13 years of being cloistered, studying the mysteries of the divine, his body fully healed, his heart finally heeded the call of adventure.

Call to Adventure (1613-17): Leo left in the dead of night on Lughnasadh 1613; never to look back upon his castle or family to quest for the life he wanted. Soon after his departure, he joined in with the mercenary company "The Black Guard" (a precursor to 'The Watch' which eventually became The Black Watch). He quickly proved himself a capable warrior and was given the rank of lieutenant. As a officer he commanded an elite squad to patrol the highlands for bandits, highwaymen, and to keep the local lords in check, all the while keeping watch for any invading forces. He lived this life for 3 years, but could not call his companions true friends, nor trusted allies.

In the autumn of 1616 Leo resigned his commission in "the Guard" and traveled to Glasgow. There he signed on as a caravan guard to small merchant house, Merchant House Griffin. He stayed on with the house for 2 years until one time they were traveling in Edinburgh. While guarding their shop a young woman, Cat "Spoonbreaker", was perusing wares an they became quick friends during their stay. She introduced him to her friends, "The Freebooters" or The Free-Men of the Seas. Upon showing his talents and experience to the crew he was offered a position on the the ship as ship's surgeon. He left the Merchant House, joined the crew and was granted the position of 2nd Lieutenant under Captain Kenneric Aubrey.

Exploration Years (1617-20) In the year 1617 The company was approached by The Duchess Marieke van de Dal. Having heard of the exploits of "The Freebooters", she made them an offer to sail under her banner as a Privateers. Many of The Company agreed, and some went their own way, so now there is some schism on the seas. Leo chose to join the Duchess and the crew of "The Green Leaf" as the ship's surgeon, and see where the seas would bring him.

Leo spent the summer and autumn of 1617 in Spain. There he met many wonderful peoples and won the fencing tourney of Baroness Jocelyn del Espada. He served Baroness Jocelyn as her court champion for a year and a day. During this time he met his future fencing master, Don Lucien de Wyntere, and his cadet Gerhardt von Hohensee.

In 1618 at the Winter Court at Birka, Tzar Ivan Ivanov Syn Dimitriov Vynuk Tzardikov and Tzarita Matilde DeCadenet recognized Leo as a noble in his own right aside his family. He took Leon's ancient heraldry, and modified it to his own, as pictured. Keeping his family legacy and making it his own.

During that summer "The Free Company" while fighting at "The War of The Roses", Cat "Spoonbreaker" brought yet another intrepid dandy into The Company, a young man named Odd. Cat had brought him in specifically because he was Leo's long lost and unknown bastard son. An indiscretion while at his time at seminary!

Also that summer during the war campaign of Pennsic, a large clan of prestigious fighters ("Duchy Drachenklaue"), took notice of his martial prowess. They had been watching him since his victory in Spain, and they extended him an offer to join them on campaign. After taking some time to consider his place on The Green Leaf and his future with The Free Company, he graciously accepted the offer to join in with Duchy Von Drachenklaue. His warrior heart may have just found it's home!

That autumn, Lord Leo was approached by Princess Fortune Sancte Keyne to be part of her Royal Guard during her reign in Venice (AS:54).

The winter of 1619 His application to the London School of Masters was accepted, and was he granted the rank of Free Scholar and cadet under the Tutelage of Master Lucien de Wyntere. During this time in Venice he studied contemporary Italian Fencing.

After serving Queen Fortune I in Venice for 10 months as one of her Guards, Leo announced that he would be taking his leave to continue his sojourn North. Queen Fortune honored him in a private ceremony with her award of esteem and the gift of a fine steed, a royal mare named "Dash", to carry him on his travels.

He sent word to his companions of The Free Company of his desire to travel north and that he would be departing the ship, and maybe they would meet again someday!

Landsknecht years (1619-present): After his departure from Venice he traveled north where he had heard word that he could make a fortune as a Landsknecht mercenary. So he threw his hat in the ring and traveled to Austria, Bavaria and Bohemia. The winter of 1620 Leo settled himself at the Walpurga Monastary and delved into studying the "German school" of fencing traditions of the "The Walpurgis Manuscript", Joachim Meyer and Liechtenauer. That summer he found himself in the middle of the Plague and the beginning of the Bohemian Revolt.

During the year of 1620 during the plague, Leo would wander from the monastery about the countryside and found himself seeking adventure as his heart always dictated. Hearing rumors of battles and death from the plague he knew death was never far behind, so to keep living as he could. His wandering brought him to a small farm with a small chosen family. He found himself becoming friends, and more than friends with them and eventually left the monastery to join the homestead. A small pod of warrior, healers and crafters, he fit right in. As the plague continued Leo sought study in martial manuscripts of Meyer, Lichtenaur, Talhoffer; learning more of the "German" school of sword play. Picking up the sabre and side sword, pole and hammer, his martial pursuits would continue.
