Introduction
THL Kai SaerPren, mka Karl F. Newman, I am a furnituremaker (and sometimes luthier) who has been practicing since 1982. I currently reside in Bhakail in the East Kingdom. I have been studying older furniture and older methods of woodworking seriously for 15 years and have been dabbling at it for over 30. “I make wood into things.”
I have been the squire of The Earl Æthelmearc for nigh on 18 years and an SCA fighter since joining in 1991.

Persona
I was born to a poor Welsh family who could only afford to pay the local priest for one letter to name me, so they chose "K". My name is Ancient Welsh for "Kay the woodcutter".
A & S
- I am a furnituremaker (and sometimes luthier) who has been practicing for over 38 years. I currently reside in Bhakail in the East Kingdom. I have been studying older furniture and older methods of woodworking seriously for 15 years and have been dabbling at it for over 30. “I make wood into things.”
- I have been teaching introductory woodworking classes at Pennsic for the last 4 years except last year (in 2015, 2016, and 2018) which seem to be well received. I do not use (much) pre-sawn or kiln dried wood, I prefer to start with a log (or a section of log) and split out pieces that can be used to make furniture. Very like much of the furniture was made during the Middle ages. I also prefer to study the vernacular or common furniture of the era...
Some More About Me
- I have been a professional cabinetmaker since 1982. I have taught night classes for 10 years in modern shop use. I found the SCA in 1991 in the Barony of Delftwood, in the principality of Aethelmearc, in the East Kingdom, and I was residing there when Aethelmearc became a kingdom. @ 2011 we moved to Philadelphia. In 1988 I took a class in Windsor Chair making and have been obsessed with the older ways of working with wood ever since. Before joining the SCA I studied Early American work.
