I first learned of the Society for Creative Anachronism in 1989, from a friend, Master Alasdair of Raasay, of the Kingdom Ealdomere.  At the time, as a parent, full time elementary teacher and an organist choir-director, I had no time for anything else in my life! Decades passed, I retired and moved to Nova Scotia, the ancestral home of my mother's family. Master Alasdair was tragically killed. Some friends in my new home became involved in the SCA and I went to a couple of practices with them. More time passed.  I joined the Ruantallan choir in Nov. 2018, but during the next year was struggling with depression and relationship issues. I dropped out again.  In August 2019, I came back strong after the kindness of friends enabled me to sing with Halifax Summer Opera. But when the idea of further involvement with the SCA arose, I was faced with opposition:  "They're MY friends, NOT your friends." Next came a terrible period of hostility, a set-up, a hastily laid and preposterous complaint and my Temporary Removal from Participation (TRP).  The confusion over what later was revealed to be a secret investigation, stunned me and I became suicidal.  In spite of fearing for my life, the 'powers that be' ignored my copious pleas. After almost a year, the B of D lifted the ban, and I returned to pick up the pieces of what started out as a wonderful opportunity to express myself musically and creatively.

Introduction

James of Sanquhar

Next came my Temporary Removal from Participation (TRP). After almost a year, the B of D lifted the ban, and I returned to pick up the pieces of what started out as a wonderful opportunity to express myself musically and creatively.

Persona

I am a Cleric who ranges during the days of the Reformation. I am not ordained, but was summoned to Rome to answer some unusual and untrue charges. I was exonerated and while returning to England heard of a priest in Wittenberg whose ideas so captivated me, that I vowed to seek him and visit. Although he was rather brash and quite blunt and direct, we shared many interests - music and hymn writing, brewing, academics, good humour and some ribaldry (though neither of us would admit it!). He supported my ideas about things that were troubling me in the church but a great deal of secrecy was necessary. Upon my return to England a devastating surprise awaited me.
