Introduction

My name is Ikeda Yasu. I have been in the SCA since about the age of 17, in 2004. I attended my first event at that time, Sommer Draw, in the Barony of Bergental. I became more active as time progressed. I have been the Webminister for the Barony of Bergental for the last 4 years (or so, I really don't recall, probably longer) and have been a member of the SCA since then as well.

As Webminister, I oversaw the progression of the private server transfer to the East Kingdom domain. I also oversaw the transition from a messy FTP transfer site to a Wordpress based site. It is now much more attractive than it was before. I have also dedicated a lot of time to creating a new mailing list on the Barony of Bergental server, a Forum for discussions, and Officer emails.

For my service as Webminister and the transition to Wordpress, I was awarded the honor of Order of the Cup of Saint Brigid, a Bergental specific service award. To this date, this is the only award I have received, but I am very proud of it.

At Pennsic 46, I placed first in the longbow division of the 5th Annual Period Bow Shoot with my yumi.

Persona

Ikeda Yasu is a member of the Ikeda family is north-central Japan during the middle of the 1300s. His father, the leader of the Ikeda family, was a samurai who fought during both Mongol invasions. His father was a common soldier under Hōjō Tokimune. In the first battle in 1274, he took the heads of three Mongols. This gained him much honor, and he was given a fief and a stipend from the Hōjō clan, giving the Ikeda family a foothold. The Mongols were repelled in this war, partially due to a typhoon, but it would not be long before they would be back. In 1281, they returned, in far greater numbers. After many battles, his father sustained a near fatal wound that crippled him. Battling infection, which almost seemed under control, his father died.

This was right around the time that Ikeda Yasu was born-- and he was raised during the recovering period after the Mongols were repelled yet again by a typhoon, a kamikaze. Being the natural heir to the family, but not yet able to take control of the household, he was raised with the best intentions. The Hōjō clan gifted the family for their father's honorable death, but it would not be too long before the Hōjō lost power.

Ikeda Yasu was raised with a caring mother, who eventually gave birth to two brothers. He had an older sister, and a younger one. It was not spoken about who the father was, and tight lips were kept about the household, small as it were, even though rumors ran about the town. They lived in Kai Province, near the middle of Japan.

Behind the scenes, a lot of things were happening to Japan. At this time, Takauji Ashikaga brought Emperor Komyo to the throne, leading to a schism in the Imperial Court after Emperor Godaigo left Kyoto and established his Court at Yoshino. This separated Japan into a northern court and a southern court.

Ikeda Yasu was trained in the martial arts like any normal samurai, but he also trained in the Ogasawara Ryu style of Yabusame horseback style archery. This, in addition to his sword techniques, and tetsubojutsu, has helped set him apart from his other samurai on the field.

By Ikeda Yasu's coming of age, he took his father's tachi, and began reviving the Ikeda family. His grandfather had been a lowly farmer, and his own father had managed to be become an ashigaru and make a name for himself. This was only the beginning. Yasu chose to fight for honor and restore authority to the northern court...

Projects & Publications

  • Ya, Japanese arrows, with hand forged yajiri (broadheads). Made with bamboo, horn knocks, silk wrapped, burn on tang, lacquered with urushi-- made earlier in 2017, plans to make more next year.
  • Currently in the planning phase for repurposing an old iaito as a Nanbokucho era tachi. Traditionally made, hand tools. I am not a black smith, so all metal items (tsuba, kashira, fuchi, seppa, kojiri), will likely need to be purchased. Otherwise, the saya (scabbard) will be made out of traditional honoki (a special magnolia wood), which will be hand carved to fit the shape of the iaito. It will be lacquered with either cashew lacquer or urushi (urushi is difficult to find in larger quantities and also highly allergenic), with my family kamon hand painted on the saya, with clear lacquer applied on top. It will likely take 10-15 coats of lacquer. Tachi have different fittings than regular katana, so those fittings (tachigoshirae) will be researched-- currently looking into museums now. The tsuka, or handle, of the sword is usually more curved for tachi, but not always, and will also be made of traditional honoki wood. Hand carved, wrapped in traditional ray skin. The traditional glue is rice paste. Ray skin is sometimes filed and lacquered. It will be wrapped in silk ito. The saya may also be fitted in silk ito, as samurai on horseback noticed that saya became damaged with wearing it on horseback.
