The land is not well suited for crops, and would likely get destroyed by our enemies anyway. We have places where we grow oats, barley, beans and peas. Farm animals are allowed to run wild and graze in the hills. We fish in the burns and keep hens, cattle and sheep. There's not much food for cattle in the winter so most are slaughtered in November and salted.

If we seem overly attached to our weapons, you must try to understand our way of life. Scotland and England are forever at each others throats and when they invade each other, they come thru our land, burning, stealing and destroying everything in sight. It's to be expected that we would occasionally ride South and take back some of what they've taken from us. When the nights are long, a pleasant ride across the border can refill empty larders and pockets quite well.

There once was a man name of Yonge

That the drops on his shield
Were the tears that he'd yield
Whenever his helmet was rung.

Introduction

Steve Young joined the SCA in October 2005. He was given his AoA on 11/11/2006 by Lucan VII and Jana IV and became a Companion of the Order of the Silver Crescent on 10/04/2008 courtesy of Darius IV and Alethea. Gryffith II and Aikaterine II inducted him into the Order of the Sagittarius on 11/13/2010.

He was a founding resident of the Vestfell Farmstead.

In 2006 Hobbe appeared on the Royal Round listings with an average of 20. His highest Royal Round ranking was that of Master Bowmen. He made the Pennsic Archery Champions team in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2010 he became the Queen's Champion of Archery serving Edward and Marguerite.

Hobbe was a member of The Rogues of Sherwood, a mercenary archery unit formed in 2006 to disrupt the scoring at Concordia's Wars of the Roses. The Rogues hired themselves out to the highest bidder for a few years and quietly disappeared when the cash ran dry. Their motto was "Caveat Emptor" (let the buyer beware) with the Corollary "It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money."

Hobbe is a member of The Feckin Family, with the title "Dirty Old Uncle".

Hobbe Yonge is a late period Scottish Border Reiver. He doesn't care what year it is. He doesn't care which Stewart is currently King. He only cares about which English town would be a good one to raid in order to obtain a supply of cattle, women and cash. Naturally, by being a Yonge, Hobbe is particularly good looking, remarkably intelligent, and extremely modest.

Persona

I live in the Scottish Borders in the late 1500's, James VI is King, but I don't pay much attention. My loyalty is to my family and our allies. I live in the pele tower, in times of trouble the local farmers come here for safety.

Meals are hearty, but unvaried. Oatmeal, beans, peas, oatcakes, porridge, boiled meat, beef broth with barley and Bannock bread, fried in a pan. A nice Scotch Ale to wash it all down. Hops are scarce on the border so we brew it with pale malt and Roasted Barley.

We also grow flax for linen. Our clothes are linen, wool and leather. Armor is really too cumbersome to wear. Some of us have back and breast plates. The preferred shirt is a jak of plaite. This vest is sometimes worn over a shirt of mail and is two or three layers of quilted cloth with small overlapping iron plates stitched between the layers of cloth. A scarf is wrapped around the neck for protection against getting one's throat cut. There is no leg armor but thigh-high thick leather riding boots worn with spurs. Sometimes small shields called bucklers are carried. Most of us wear Steel Bonnets (Burgonet, Morion, etc) for protection of the upper part of the face and neck. These are usually peaked on top with protective cheek plates and a flared rim to protect the neck. They are padded inside with leather.

Almost all of us are skilled horseman and have a sturdy Galloway pony, called a ‘hobbler’. These are about thirteen hands, stocky and shaggy. They are unshod which ensures they are sure footed on the damp and uneven ground. They are unmatched for agility and stamina. Like an Englishman, they do not enjoy grooming. The Border Laws requires that all men must appear at Muster Days with all arms and armor. Of course we do not show the government everything we have... The lance or the lang spear is the most common weapon and is about 8 to 12 feet in length with a metal point or knife attached. We have basket hilted broad swords, ballock daggers or dirks (long narrow daggers, carried by everyone including the clergy).

Many of us have longbows or a small light crossbow known as the latch. A few prefer Pistols, but these are tedious to load and reload and accidents can result in losing a good hand. They were not particularly accurate unless at a very close range, where they are devastating. Matchlock rifles are becoming quite popular. Men on foot like to carry 16 foot pikes or a Jeddart Staff which is a slim 4 foot long blade of steel on an 8 foot stick.

It's not all fighting and reiving though, we celebrate during the traditional times of the year. Hogmany and Hallowmas are times for Ceilidhs and the Robin Hood Games on Mayday are filled with cock-fighting, horse racing, football, wrestling, stones of strength, tug of war, archery, and story telling.

Fastern's E'en is great fun when we go to Jeddart and watch the town Hand Ba' game that has hundreds of men on each side. Hand Ba' is played with a small leather ball. We form up two teams and try to get the Ba' from the center of town to our end of town.

Our valley recently became Protestant. I'm not entirely certain what the difference is, but I'm still glad that Dad had the foresight to leave my right hand out of the christening ceremony so I may strike unhallowed blows on my enemies and not risk my soul. I hear there are witches up North in East Lothian and that they are having trials. I suppose I wouldn't know a witch if I saw one.
