A Carolingian style of binding based on information in Szirmai. Sewn on double cords and then laced through shaped 1/4" poplar boards and secured with twists on the outer faces of the boards rather than with pegs.

I chose poplar because it is pretty, cheap, and very easy to work. After this photograph, I also sewed endbands in her colors. But I left the wood bare so that there would be no animal products used on the book for a vegetarian.

Lanaquarelle paper (watermarked Lana) from France. "The Lana Mill was founded in the village of Duxelles in the 15th century and prospered because of its location near monasteries and universities that required quantities of paper." - text from New York Central Art Supply Catalog see also: http://www.lanapapier.fr/en/company/our-history/

Lacing pattern would more likely have been symmetrical, but I was trying out the several different options presented in Szirmai. Actual drilling in the boards was done by one of my camp-mates at Pennsic.
