Born the third bairn to the clan laird , with small prospect for wealth of his own, Dunnie was sent to live and serve a cousin as a porter in a unit of Gallowglass mercenaries in Donnagal in Eire. Learning well from his cousins the skills of sword, axe, and bow, with time on the field, he grew in stature and rank.
 
Traveling became a way of life as Dunnie's skills were called for in many places, from the courts of the Francs to swampy planes of the Holy Roman Empire. He became exsposed to many of the crafts, trades, and arts in his long journies and became fascinated with any new sights and wonders.
