Introduction

Fighter (weapons forms: glaive, great sword, spear, dane axe, sword & shield), mead maker, inter-kingdom master of hospitality, drummer, archer, artist, forager and forester. The Honorable Lord (an onórach tiarna) Ciarán Ua Baoighill, great defender of the East Kingdom went to his first war during Pennsic 33 at the age of 19. Ciarán fell in love with the clash of fighting, the drums that rang in the night air, the stories and songs told and sang by magical bards around burning bright flames, the variety of merchants, the magical Celts and Vikings that he has now known as his chosen family, among other camps and tribes, the clothing and the arts and sciences that all encompass the SCA. Ciarán has fought at every war since Pennsic 33 as a mercenary from the Aerie of Tir Thalor, which he became a member of in the field of battle during a thunderstorm that could have been brought down by the likes of Taranis, Thor or Raijin. Ciarán’s mercenary career was from 2004-2019. Ciarán’s encampment has been hired by Clanne Preachain since Pennsic 27. Ciarán’s brother-in-law Elam (Captain of Tir Thalor) introduced him to sword fighting when he was 12 years of age. Elam would talk of Pennsic War, glory and different stories and Ciarán would day dream about creating his own glory, stories and friendships on the battlefield. Ciarán is no longer a mercenary and has sworn fealty to his knight Jarl Ivan and now fights with the East Kingdom. Ciarán still camps with Tir Thalor and acts as the hiring liaison for the camp. Ciarán is often teaching new fighters at his local practice, among others, the foundations for great weapons and melee combat.

Persona

Early Middle Ages Norse-Gael mixed with Iron Age Celt (Norse-Gael and Helvetii). Ciarán’s homeland lies in the northwest of Tír Chonaill (County Donegal). Ciarán was born in Luimneach (Limerick) during the first Viking raids…little more is known. During the last month of her pregnancy, Ciarán’s mother (Aíne) brought him home to Tír Ainmhireach. Aíne’s father was one of the head chieftains there at this time. Ciarán might have travelled with Vikings from the Limerick area in his adult life. Unfortunately, sadly, again, little more is known.

Ciarán’s family are direct descendants of the “Luigni", the Síl Lugdach tribe, a people from a remote area of Donegal that constituted a tiny kingdom, which had an ongoing association with the pagan god Lug - Lugh Lamhfhada.

I took my surname from my mothers side of my mundane family, the O’Boyle Clanne of Donegal.

I like to embrace all true “Celticness”, the amazing migratory transfer of culture, art and language throughout ancient Europe. I loves to combine Hallstatt and La Tene culture into my personas appearance. I also like to play (or mix in) a Gaulish warrior from the Tigurini tribe, the most important of four subgroups (Pagi) of the mighty Helvetii. The Tigurini settled in Western Switzerland and were bearers of the late La Tène culture in western Switzerland. My name then being Ciarán d’alltherian Tostigh

I am still working on full Norse-Gael Armor with Hallstatt and La Tene influence. Maybe one day my heavy kit will represent my actual persona. For now, it is still all over the place.

Projects & Publications

Ciarán likes to research and cook historical early period Roman and Viking meals on a fire. He is an artist that would love to start drawing historical images with painting as his medium. Ciarán has made chainmail necklaces, in different weaves, out of bronze and steel for knights, squires and much of the populace of the known-world. Ciarán is a forager who specializes in mushroom identification, as well as a mead and beer brewer who brews along side his Tir Thalor brother Djaygo Kochou. Most brews are non-historic concoctions. Ciarán also makes Atholl Bróse, a historical drink made from Scotch, honey and oats. Ciarán’s clothing is influenced from early period Gaul, 8th-10th century North Western Ireland (Northern Uí Niéll) and 6th-9th century Viking age (Specifically Norse-Gael). Ciarán collects amber and loves to bead amber necklaces, he also collects coins.. if you want to give him any of the two, he will kindly accept. Ciarán loves Skaldic and Eddic poetry and is hoping that one day he can recite some without looking at his notes. He is a percussionist and plays the Middle Eastern Dumbek, Celtic Bodhrán, a Viking Frame Drum and of course, Goat Toes, among whatever else he might get his hands on. Ciarán also loves to play historical games like Hunker Hausen, Bocce ball and any other games in his reach. Ciarán would love to play you for your coins, amber, furs or anything else.. even for fun. Ciarán is known as a master of hospitality throughout the known world, as he has been known to bartend royal party’s and vigils among the known world.
