Introduction

Lady Caitríona inghean Ui Shíodhacháin

Persona

Caitríona inghean Ui Shíodhacháin is from the Island of Arran off the West coast of Scotland, in the Firth of Clyde. Here she was born and raised by her mother, descended from Norse Vikings who inhabited the islands when they were known as the South Isles in the 10th century, and her her father, descended from Celts who's people came to the islands after the Treaty of Perth in 1266 made it part of Scotland. She was trained by her mother in the ways of midwifery and herbalism, spinning and weaving, and by her learned father in the arts of words, reading, writing, calligraphy and is in the process of learning painting and illumination. Caitríona met her husband, Brian of Centre Downe when he came across the Firth on a ship, headed for London, and later, Salerno Italy where she studied medicine at the Schola Medica Salernitana, in the tradition of Trotula of Salerno.
