Introduction

Of Orcadian and Highland ancestry, Brita Pendane was a Manx healer in the 10th century.

Although her first name is a diminutive of Brigid, it is pronounced BREE-ta. She's just ornery like that.

Persona

Something of a misanthrope, Brita preferred long foraging expeditions and herbal experiments to treating patients, but her island's position as a busy Viking market and cultural crossroads put her skills in high demand whether she liked it or not. She adopted a Cornish orphan, hoping to pass on her skills, but even as a toddler the girl showed a fierce penchant for swordfighting. Consequently, the girl spent more time as a patient than as an assistant.

Brita lived in a cottage in one of the Isle of Man's small, quiet forests with her daughter and her husband, Jeffrey, a falconer and accomplished sailor.
