In terms of calligraphy and illumination, Brian has a slight preference for late 15th century Western European styles, but loves great art work of all kinds.

== Introduction ==

Brian of Stonemarche is Brian Chabot in mundane life and has been active in the SCA since October 2002.  He was drawn to the SCA following the passing of Earl [[Aelfwine Denedom|Ælfwine Dunedain]].  Brian is a rapier marshal and two time Baronessa's Rapier Champion in the Barony of Stonemarche. He is an authorized Heavy List fighter, C&T Marshal, Rebated Steel Marshal, Harnischfechten Experiment Marshal, and SCA Equestrian.  

In recent years, Brian has been active in bringing more historical armored combat to the SCA, first as the East Kingdom Marshal for Rebated Steel and then as the East Kingdom Marshal for the Harnischfechten Experiment. He hopes these can be combined into a new set of Harnischfechten rules to be universally applied as a new SCA combat form.

== Interests ==

Brian has a passion for sword fighting, armor, horses, and sailing. He also loves to make practical things.

==== Sword Fighting ====

Brian studies Elizabethan era fencing, especially the English style which he terms "the lazy style" for its simple concepts and footwork. 

He is currently studying, in depth, historical armored combat on foot, both for tournaments and duels. He is (slowly) working on a research paper based on the mid-15th c. essay, "How A Man Shall be Armed" and as part of that research, his style of recreating arming points has been adopted by multiple re-enactors and praised by mundane academics. As a larger project, he is working to transcribe and translate the text of the codex containing that essay for the modern reader. 

He is currently studying translations of various period fight manuals for practical applications and lessons. Mundanely he runs a workshop on this every other week in Nashua, NH. 

==== Horses ====

While a relatively new area for him, Brian has been learning to ride in various saddles and studying historical equestrian sources since the Fall of 2020. He has set for himself a goal of becoming an active historical jouster, both in the SCA with frangible lances and outside the SCA with solid lances. He loves practicing equitation and looks forward to beginning to work with horses in the SCA. 

Mundanely, he has had a rare opportunity of a lesson at Historic Equitation in England, where riding a well trained horse in authentic (reproduction) 15th century saddle on a list field cemented his goal and he fell in love with the feel of that kind of saddle. 

He has a love for the animals and feels like he bonds quickly with them. He also loves practical exercises like equitation, trail riding, and occasional jumping. 

==== Crafts (A&S) ====

He loves making practical things but isn't usually interested in entering them into A&S competitions. His philosophy there is: "The only person I compete with in arts and sciences is myself.  And I am a vigorous competitor there!"  He has crafted books, navigation instruments, clothing, equipment chests, armor accessories, knife and sword scabbards, a sword belt, and more. 

Current crafting projects as of May 2024 include: A 15th c. men's long coat and a new pair of turnshoes.  In the works are a new hood, doublet, and a couple shirts.

=== (Primary) 3rd Quarter 15th c. ===
Southern France / Northern Italy, circa 1460-1470, landless gentry.  Enjoys tournaments of all kinds and answers calls to war. Developed an interest in artillery and handgonnes at the Battle of Castillon.  Traveled much around France, Florence, Provence, Aquitaine, Burgundy, Savoy, Geneva, and Aragon. He loves the Mediterranean coast and spending time on ships there. He is fond of sharing an invigorating and rare beverage he obtained from traveling Sufi sages with his friends.

Western Europe (probably France), circa 1390-1400. Man-At-Arms.  Doer of Deeds. 

=== 16th c. English (ca. 1590's) ===
Brian of Stonemarche is an English Merchant Adventurer from London, who practices Rapier & Dagger in the English Style. While his fighting is English, he has a penchant for Italian clothing styles.  By trade, he is a merchant, with a love of travel and meeting new people and bringing home rare and exotic goods to sell in London.  Business is good and he may be in the market to outfit a small fleet... He is especially fond of this rare and intoxicating beverage the Ottomans drink, called coufee...

=== 11th c. Saxon (ca. 1090's) ===
Brian of Stonemarche was born to a family of traders from the Liverpool area with strong ties to Ireland. His parents & grandparents survived Williem's invasion by being decidedly neutral.  If you wanted to do business, that was fine.  Brian runs a booming import export business sometimes traveling with groups of Crusaders to locate rare spices and other goods from the Mediterranean region.

== Service Philosophy ==

Brian views service as "something we all should be doing" and lives by the idea that many hands make light work. He appreciates occasional recognition for outstanding work, but feels guilty being awarded for "normal, everyday things we all should be doing." 

Once when lamenting about his induction into the Order of the Silver Wheel as just such an award, a friend who is a Companion of the Pelican leaned over and told him, "...spoken like a true Pelican."  Said friend also once threatened him with a yellow belt if he kept up that attitude. Brian smiled and accepted that his might eventually be his fate. 

Brian does prefer, though, to be recognized more specifically for what he works harder for, rather than the necessary tasks of every day life in the SCA.
