When she was of marriageble age Joan married the son of a local merchant. She was very unhappy in her marriage, as her husband was very strict with her and his money. Gone where the days when presents would be brought for her, she instead would earn money working as a seamstress. Shortly after giving birth to a daughter, her husband was killed one night on the road to London.
Her uncle was one of M. le Baron de Sainte Claire landowners and during a stay in England, her uncle asked her to come to France and tend to his household. His wife had passed a few months earlier leaving him with no children. Not wanting to remarry, she packed up her infant daughter and moved to France.
She had been living in France for many years when her uncle died after a long illness. With her daughter married and living in England she stills lives in France managing the small estate.
